Careful here. They subcontract to Ilha Verde (Green Island) car rental. Look up their ratings on Google and you will understand why I'm rating so low.
Worst experience renting a car...EVER. When we got out at 12:00pm we waited in the Ilha Verde line for about 40 mins and was told Avis operates through them. However they couldn't find our reservation because their systems aren't connected. So I had to wait 30 mins for her to contact Avis and communicate our reservation. I was patient about it and it didn't bug me. But after being patient and being told it would be 10 mins for the car, it took another 45 minutes for us to get our car! The front of the airport was filling up with a lot of unhappy customers, myself included. By the time we got out of the airport it was 2:05pm. There were many other rental places that were not busy. I would NOT recommend Avis or Ilha Verde as it took very long and the counter reps didn't seem to car, as they passed the blame. Consider another company or if you even need a car.
Avoid at all costs. We originally booked a small car (a Twingo) online via Avis only to be told that Ilha Verde (Avis' representative on Sao Miguel) had no record of our booking despite our printed confirmation with reference number - apparently there are lots of miscommunications and lost information between Avis and Ilha Verde because they use two different booking systems, so this happens all the time apparently. When we chose our Twingo we asked for a Sat Nav. They agreed and handed us the car keys. We went out to the parking lot and were confronted with a huge SUV that we weren't comfortable driving at all (and was not what we had booked), so we returned to the desk only to be told that there were no small cars with Sat Navs and that we either had to take a small car with no Sat Nav or air conditioning, or a huge car with both. As we were travelling on a budget, we didn't want to take a large, expensive car, but they assured us that we wouldn't pay more for it (which didn't quite make sense to us) - it turns out that the staff get commission for selling the larger cars, so they really push for them. Settling on a slightly smaller Mazda CX-5, our Sat Nav then didn't work as they hadn't given us an SD card. When eventually we got out of the airport we had a really lovely week-long trip around the island, only to be called up back in London to be informed that we have to pay an additional 50 worth of unseen taxes. Awful customer service, really dishonest - we recommend you book with another company like Hertz.
Car was OK but they subcontract to ilha Verde, just like europcar and they always have the longest queues - expect to wait an hour. Meanwhile the other desks in the terminal are empty ...Try varela rent a car or Hertz unless you like standing in arrivals halls for half the holiday
